About

Dr. Sotoodehnia, the John and Cookie Laughlin Endowed Professorship in Cardiovascular Research, is co-director of the Cardiovascular Health Research Unit. She is a general cardiologist at Harborview Medical Center. 

She conducts research on the genomics and epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors. Her research focus includes cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac arrest, diabetes and coronary heart disease. She and her group are leading efforts in precision medicine, examining drug-gene interactions, risk prediction and drug safety. Her work investigates gender and ethnic differences in cardiovascular risk and outcomes. In addition, she has a long interest in international health and is helping lead efforts in cardiovascular treatments in Nepal. 

Dr. Sotoodehnia earned her bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. She earned her M.D. from Harvard Medical School and her M.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health, both in Boston, MA. She came to the UW for residency training in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiovascular diseases. Her research is supported by numerous NIH and foundation grants. 

She joined the University of Washington’s Division of Cardiology faculty in 2003. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the AHA Elizabeth Barrett-Connor Young Investigator Award, the Stamler Distinguished Young Investigator Award, the Philip and Helen Fialkow Scholar and the Kaylor Award. In 2013, she was elected for membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation. 

Dr. Sotoodehnia is an active member of the American Heart Association and is board certified in cardiovascular disease. She is associate director of the Cardiovascular Medicine Research Training Program and is associate editor of the international cardiology journal, Heart. Dr. Sotoodehnia speaks English and Farsi. Her personal interests include hiking, swimming, traveling, and a good discussion.
